Quills Fest is Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s annual festival for immersive technology and live performance.

What We Did

Cloudred helped Oregon Shakespeare Festival create the digital ecosystem for Quills Fest, a festival dedicated to immersive performance and extended reality. We designed and developed the Quills Fest website as the central hub for artists, projects, events, and audience discovery, then extended that experience into the Quills Fest VR World — a theatrical virtual environment inspired by OSF’s Elizabethan theatre. Together, the website and VR World gave audiences multiple ways to explore new forms of storytelling across web, VR, and live experience.

Quills Fest engages artists and audiences around the world in Virtual Reality (VR), on the web, and in person, in a VR pop-up. Exhibitions of world-premiere Extended Reality (XR) experiences, performances that push the boundaries of liveness, and conversations that invite the audience into the behind-the-scenes of XR production highlight the most adventurous voices in art and immersive technology.

Work in progress sketch of the quills fest vr world by architect and artist Paolo Barlascini
Quills Fest VR World is inspired by the original Shakespearean tradition of the Elizabethan theatre as a radically welcoming space where the public gathered to have shared theatrical experiences. Designed by architect and artist Paolo Barlascini and brought to life by Emmy Yupa—lead Unreal Engine developer, Quills Fest VR World presents an environment that is richly interactive, celebrates curiosity, and is full of “easter eggs”!
The deconstructed elizabethan theater with avatars. A simple, elevated white platform or runway with clean edges. Top Left (Avatar 1): A full-body view of a bald, muscular avatar with a patterned yellow and gold cape, intricate black lace leggings, knee pads, and arm and neck armor. It stands against a background with horizontal lines and a purple and green gradient. Top Right (Avatar 2): A full-body view of a bald avatar in an sculptural white garment featuring 3D printed line work, spikes around the shoulders, and white platform sneakers with green details. The avatar is standing in the same pose and against the same background as the first. Bottom Left (Avatar 3): A full-body view of a bald avatar wearing a ruffled white shirt with an all-seeing eye motif on the chest, and wide-legged white pants with black stripes. It is in the same pose as the other avatars and has black boots. Bottom Right (Avatar 4): A full-body view of an avatar with curly hair wearing a white top with a prominent, golden ornate chest piece resembling a large butterfly with detailed wing patterns. The avatar wears red pants and platform sneakers.
A playful and surreal take on OSF’s iconic Elizabethan stage, populated with Avatars designed by Selly Raby Kane, a renowned Sengalese fashion designer and artist pioneering Africa’s booming art and design movement.
